2009 IRA RMD

On Tuesday December 23, 2008 President Bush signed into law legislation suspending the required minimum distribution requirements for 2009 for IRA and 401k account holders (as well as inherited IRA owners). The new 2009 IRA RMD rules allow retirement savers, over the age of 70 1/2, to skip taking the ira required minimum distribution from their IRAs for 2009.

So, any one who turns 70 1/2 in 2009, or was making an RMD withdrawal in 2008 would be able to skip taking a mandatory IRA withdrawal in 2009 if they so choose. RMD rules will apply back again in 2010 and ira distributions will have to commence.
